2013 NBA Mid-Season Thoughts

The NBA All-Star Weekend has arrived and this is the best time of the year for the game, a celebration if you will of the game that we all love.  In a way this year's All-Star showcase is a transitional year due to the multitude of first time All-Stars that we have the likes of Paul George of the Pacers and Jrue Holiday of the Sixers.  There's been much drama this season and many ups and downs from franchises that are simply not used to inconsistent play.  We've been on this journey together thus far this season the following are my thoughts on things I've seen thus far at the season's mid point.

There's no other topic that's better to start with than the drama that's hovering over the city of Los Angeles.  The drama shouldn't surprise anyone based on the fact that drama seems to follow Dwight Howard.  Howard loves to have things his way and he whines more than my two-year old nephew.  The Lakers organization and fans feel the pain.  Simply put, Howard needs to learn to shut the hell up! I understand where Kobe and Steve Nash are coming from and its just like the same as when Shaq spoke about Howard.  He needs to understand that these men have what he wants sans Nash and they are not trying to put him down.  Howard seemingly takes everything personally but when someone speaks out about Howard they are trying to motivate him and fuel him to push himself harder.

An Open Letter to Dwight Howard:

Please Dwight Howard, play through the pain stop being a big baby.   No disrespect but Glen Davis plays for the Orlando Magic and he has already taken that nickname son and he's only called that because he actually looks like a big baby.....you just act like one.  I'd like to hope that you take one piece of advice from me.  Listen to your peers sometimes, trust me it helps, you had a "Magic Kingdom" in Orlando and you deserted it for the Big City, so now you must deal with the pressure that comes along with playing for a Big City Franchise.  If you wanted to have everything go your way and be the "Franchise", you should have kept your throne in O-Town you big baby!

The Boston Celtics have struggled mightily this season and I wonder if they will remain relevant during the remainder of the season. The Celtics have been hanging around in the bottom of the Eastern Conference Playoff standings but with the recent injuries to All-Star Rajon Rondo and Leandro Barbosa, I'm not sure if the Celtics will be much of a contender or at least I don't think they will advance too far into the playoffs.  The Boston Celtics have a great coach in Doc Rivers, but they have to face the fact they are old and with the younger stronger teams they face in the east, it will wear on them the odds that they will make it back to the Eastern Conference Finals are slim to none.

The rise of the Los Angeles Clippers in the Western Conference has really been a surprise to me.  Who at the beginning of the season would have thought that the Clippers would have a better record than the Lakers and also would have beaten them 3 times to date this season?  The Clippers are big, athletic, and of course no one can sleep on the floor generalship of Chris Paul.  With that being said, I don't feel that the Clippers will be strong enough to defeat the Spurs nor the Thunder in potential playoff series'.  If I had to make a choice now, I'd pick a Heat/Thunder rematch for the NBA Finals but there's plenty of time left in the season and anything can still happen.

Controversy sells

Carmelo Anthony begin the season on fire and initially lead the MVP race and for a short time Kevin Durant again dominated the MVP discussion but "The King" soon arrived to reclaim his throne.  LeBron James has been on a tear as of late and there's no question that he's the MVP of this current season but in the past I've seen sure things take a detour.  If politics has anything to do with it, Kevin Durant may very well be crowned the MVP at season's end due to the fact that he's been seemingly "next in line" for 3 years now.  Controversies keeps entity in the news so don't be surprised.

The second half of the NBA season should be as exciting as the first half and I can't wait until the playoffs begin as my predictions were spot on last season.  The playoffs always reveal surprises and many questions are answered but the main question will be, who will be able to knock out the defending NBA Champion Miami Heat?
